What is your job on this show?
Director.
When did you know you wanted to work in the theater, and why?
I never thought I would be in theater. I come from a contemporary art background, and it is my first time showing this piece outside of the art community (and outside of Japan.)
Complete this sentence: My show is the only one in FringeNYC that...?
has no dialogue.
In your own words, what do you think this show is about? What will audiences take away with them after seeing it?
"Six String Sonics, The" is about reinventing the guitar.
I created "Six String Sonics, The" to rid the guitar of its ergonomic limitations and make room for more possibilities in composition. Instead of stringing 1 guitar with six strings, I created 6 single string guitars to be played collaboratively by 6 guitarists at the same time. The resulting compositions sound much more colorful than standard guitar music, as the group is capable of reaching many more chords and melodies.
Which “S” word best describes your show: SMOOTH, SEXY, SMART, SURPRISING?
Smart
Can theatre bring about societal change? Why or why not?
It offers a place for imaginary societies and lifestyles to exist, offering a glimpse at what is possible. It breaks paradigms and gives birth to new.
