Bread & Puppet Theater

nytheatre.com q&a preview by Katherine Nook
November 12, 2012

What is your job on this show?
Resident Puppeteer (meaning I do a little bit of everything.).

What type of theater do you like most to work on?
Puppet theater! More specifically puppet theater born out of recycling bins, puppet theater with live noise or music, puppet theater that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Complete this sentence: My show is the only one opening in NYC this fall that...?
will have between 10-30 volunteers (servers, musicians, activists, baristas, nurses, puppeteers, people who have never been on stage before and others) that will rehears with us for 3 days and be a very vital part of the show.

How did you meet your fellow artists/collaborators on this show?
A couple years ago I was an intern for the Bread and Puppet summer season and I soon knew there was nothing else I wanted to do. The small group of Bread and Puppet puppeteers in this show including Peter Schumann are people I am lucky enough to work with on many projects throughout the year. The majority of the cast are community volunteers some of which I work with every December in NYC, some of which I look forward to meeting.

Groucho, Chico, Harpo, or Zeppo?
Harpo! Hands down, who needs words when you have your body and that little whistle.

Who are your heroes?
Everyone who grows their own food or eats gourmet meals out of a garbage can, those who question the capitalist system we are all a part of. Those who have endured an injustice and then fights to the bitter end to ensure that it will not happen to others. Those how remember to laugh.
