What is your job on this show?
What is your show about?
Gary Goldfarb, an over-weight Jewish boy from Long Island dreams of being a world class magician and escape artist.
Where were you born? Where were you raised? Where did you go to school?
I was born in the small northern town of Schaffhausen in Switzerland to an Israeli Polish born father and a Swiss born mother. As a small infant, I moved along with my parents to Johannesburg, South Africa. We remained there until I was about eleven years old. Our next stop was Haifa, Israel for about four years, until we found ourselves in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After my first two years of high school, we moved yet again, this time to Staten Island, New York. Undergrad in upstage New York. Grad school in California.
Why do you do theater (as opposed to film, or TV, or something not in the entertainment field)?
Why do I theater? It's a mix of who the hell knows, why the hell not, I don't think I could do anything else, and I don't think I want to do anything else.
Are there any cautions or warnings you’d like to make about the show (e.g., not appropriate for little kids)?
I think people assume we have written a kids show because of the topic and the magic aspect of the piece. But I'd suggest keeping it at PG-13. It's slightly naughty.
Which “S” word best describes your show: SMOOTH, SEXY, SMART, SURPRISING?
I'm not sure what you mean by "smooth". If you find my show sexy, then there's something wrong with you. So I think I would go with smart and surprising. Surprising, as I think audience members will get a little more than they bargained for. In a good way. I hope.
If you had ten million dollars that you had to spend on theatrical endeavors, how would you use the money?
I would create more opportunities to nurture the development of new musicals. There are talented unheard voices out there and not enough affordable outlets- or producers willing to give the untried and untested a chance.
