Desire! [A Varsouviana]

nytheatre.com q&a preview by Rachel Buethe
November 12, 2012

What is your job on this show?
Actor/Co-Writer.

What type of theater do you like most to work on?
New plays. Fresh adaptations of old plays. Theatre that can't be contained to the page or put on a television screen. Theatre that has an agenda and a specific point of view.

Complete this sentence: My show is the only one opening in NYC this fall that...?
...has scenes between Tennessee Williams and a Dubstep DJ.

In your own words, what do you think this show is about? What will audiences take away with them after seeing it?
The play is about how to move forward in life when it would be so much easier and more comforting to live in the past. It's about the burden of family and the struggle to take care of someone who seems impossible to care for. And it's also about trying to take all the personal junk in your life, make sense of it, and (in the case of our protagonist) write a play about it that doesn't totally blow.

Which famous New Jerseyite would like your show the best: Snooki, Bruce Springsteen, Thomas Edison?
Snooki. Desire! takes place in a the darkest, dirtiest club around so she'd totally fit in. Plus I bet she's secretly into Tennessee Williams and is really hankering for a good deconstructionist take on one of his plays.

If you had ten million dollars that you had to spend on theatrical endeavors, how would you use the money?
I'd definitely buy some sort of space/theater for LTR. We'd love a home of our own, obviously. Then maybe set up some sort of educational program through the company... or just make it possible for young people to always get cheap tickets to our shows... oh, and definitely give some to the Fordham theatre program (where I got my BA) because without them I wouldn't have a theatre company or know how to read a play or have any friends.
